ROBERT MONDAVI WINERY AND INNISKILLIN WINES POURED AT 2009 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE DINNER

Oakville, CA – December 15, 2009 – Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon and Inniskillin Icewine were among the wines selected and served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner in Oslo on December 10th. Following the awards ceremony, the banquet took place in the Mirror Room of Oslo’s historic hotel, The Grand. At the ceremony, U.S. President Barack H. Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize in the presence of the King of Norway, Harald V, world leaders and foreign dignitaries.

The Oslo award ceremony is traditionally followed by a five-course banquet. Among the wines selected for this occasion was the 2005 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and the Inniskillin 2003 Gold Oak aged Vidal Icewine. The Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon was paired with the evening’s main course: Juniper berry- and thyme-marinated elk. The Inniskillin was paired with dessert, a caramel and chocolate glazed banana mousse with peanut meringue. During the event, President Obama raised a glass of Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon in a toast acknowledging his mother and sister. 

The wines were selected by the Nobel Committee and a special tasting panel at the Grand Hotel at a trial tasting prior to the December 10^th event.

“It was an honor to be chosen,” said Director of Winemaking for Robert Mondavi Winemaking, Genevieve Janssens. “I’m thrilled that a California Cabernet was served at this special occasion. I believe Mr. Mondavi would have been very proud as well.”

Inniskillin winemaker Bruce Nicholson said, “I am truly humbled and honored to have had our Icewine be part of such a prestigious international awards dinner where President Obama was recognized.”

When Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, died in 1896 his will established five prizes, including one for peace. The Swedish-born inventor’s will instructed that the “Nobel Peace Prize” be awarded in the Norwegian capital of Oslo each year.

• Last week in Oslo, Norway, the Nobel Committee awarded the peace prize to President Barack Obama for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy.” At the gala dinner he attended afterward, the committee practiced some international diplomacy of their own, choosing wines from both the United States and our neighbor to the north, Canada, to complement the meal. Alongside a Nordic-themed dinner of elk marinated with juniper berries and thyme, they poured Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon 2005. Canada got the nod for dessert: Inniskillin Vidal Niagara Peninsula Ice Wine Oak-Aged 2003 was paired with caramel- and chocolate-glazed banana mousse with peanut meringue. The wines were tapped from a short list by the Nobel Committee and a special tasting panel prior to the dinner. As Unfiltered always says come holiday season, cheers to peace on earth and good wine toward men.
